POLLYTALK FROM NEW YORK

NEW YORK’S A RARE CULURAL MIX

Nowadays in books and plays a cultural mix, it seems, is quite the craze.  Why look at my
Monday’s , an average day--rare book collections, modern dramas and I adore a theatrical
fashion but getting around New York is my passion. My life is as full as a woman’s can be, I’m a
city sleuth as busy as a bee but Halloween really does scare me!!! Here’s the scoop!!!

Mon Dieu!!! Danish-born artist Gerda Wedener took Art Deco Paris by storm and became a
very popular artist in early 20th century.   Quelle scandal!! She made artistic portrayals of
fashion, but most notably erotic scenes, inspired by the Art Deco movement. She also became
widely acclaimed for her political journals, and prolific illustrations in La Vie Parisienne, Vogue, La
Baionette and other premier fashion magazines. Together with her husband Einar Wegener, she
was part of the Parisien artist scene, living a life with decadence, sex and fashion. Her teacher,
husband and agent was the first known transsexual, and one of the first to undergo gender
transformation surgery. Later he went by the name of Lili Elbe.  This rare portfolio/book exhibition
at the LEONARD FOX GALLERY examines Gerda’s art and her life through her fashion
illustrations, advertisements and portraits of the idealized femme fatale.  Members only ADSNY
event. Oct. 28 at Leonard Fox, 790 Madison Ave., Rm 505.  RSVP 2l2.679.3326. Special guest
invitation from Leonard Fox on Oct. 28th /call 212.879.7077 or foxrarebooks@gmail.com.  Both
events at 6:30 to 8pm.

Fashion is my passion and takes me to “AMERICAN BEAUTY: Aesthetics and Innovation in
Fashion” at The Museum at FIT offering an exploration of how the creation of exquisite couture
garments is reliant on the craft of dressmaking, an artform worth the viewing.  Ninety examples
from 25 master American designers---from well known to nearly forgotten to rising stars, including
Adrian, Bonnie Cashin, James Galanos, Halston, Elizabeth Hawes, Charles James, Clair
McCardell, Ralph Rucci, Pauline Trigere, Yeolee, WHEW!!! To name a few have their turn at fame
in the exhibition hall that explores how the “philosophy of beauty” is allied to the craft of
dressmaking. Each of the 75 looks on display was chosen to exemplify the relationship between
technical ingenuity and artistic excellence. The Museum at FIT, Fashion Institute of Technology at
27th Street and Seventh Ave. Yoox.com, the online retailer, is the museum’s media partner for
American Beauty and will post interview with some of the key designers. On view: Nov. 6 –Jan. 9,
2010. Musuem hours: Tues.-Fri noon-8pm, Sat. 10-5pm.  Free and open to the public. www.fitnyc.

READER ALERT: PIERRE CARDIN and his groundbreaking avant-garde designs are set to be
celebrated in a new book that commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Paris-based fashion
house. The 300-page “PIERRE CARDIN:  “FASHION’S ARCHITECT,” published by Assouline,
takes a visual journey highlighting Cardin’s contribution to the world of couture, fashion and
perfume and almost all sorts of accessories and household items.  Though born near Venice in
1922, he moved to France just as soon as the muse could inspire.  Nonspotable Cardin!!!  At the
age of at 81 his design credits include non-fashion products including car interiors, airline
uniforms, the art world and the restaurant Maxim’s in Paris. No wonder he’s a household name.

Well, Ta Ta Darlings!!! Let me share my little Halloween ‘09 poem with you.  “I don’t care for
scary things, Zombies, robots, webby wings. Witches zooming aloft on brooms, Strike me
nauseous as they loom.  Demons leave me positively cold, Spooky black cats I’m not sold.
Graveyard adventures digger deep, Ghostly creates walk and creep.  Monsters, Scarecrows are
so grim, Mischievous goblins such a sin. Candy corn, bats, ghoulish skulls, Scary masks, creepy
candy’s dull. Eerie haunted houses chilly bones, Jumbled rooms kids like to roam. Trick-or-
Treaters claim the day, Keep knocking, they won’t go away. But I really don’t give a hoot, I’m
giving Halloween the boot!!!
