Networking News
By Andrew Perretti

2007 was Business Before
Sunrises inaugural year,
and what a year it turned out
to be. However, now is not the
time to reminisce or rest on our
laurels. As master's of our own
destiny, our career is one of
the most important components
in a development process that
literally feeds our families. In order to compete for each slice
of the local business pie, one must think like a fine point pen
writes. Put away the crayons because 2008 is going to be a
banner year for each one of us.

I'm excited to be part of Business Before Sunrise, and part of
the world's largest referral organization, BNI. I'm happy to get
up an hour early every Tuesday morning to meet with
colleagues over a hot breakfast where there is not only a free
flow of networking ideas, but development exercises that
encourage participation that promotes growth as a chapter
and as individuals. That's an important benefit of being an
early riser, and making an effort to fit the BNI model. The
mold is cast, but it is up to each one of us to apply the
principles we learn each week in order to benefit from the
system. BNI is a indeed a system, and a powerful one at that!
Would you  join for any other reason?

We are all here for the same reasons which are certainly not
limited to being successful in our own right. Each one of us
experiences success within their respective profession or
occupation to varying degrees. However, the success of our
chapter, or any BNI chapter for that matter, is interwoven
among the members. Your success is our success, and our
success is your success. We not only grow our own business
when each of us follows the BNI model of making referrals
and recommendations, we grow as a chapter as well. The
more the chapter grows, the more each of us benefit as well.

Synergy is created when like-minded individuals learn how to
function as a group. A group acting in unison can accomplish
far more than an individual. However, a group acting as a
bunch of "individuals" is just that, and not a group at all. We
have to be more than a bunch of hungry individuals waiting
around for someone to literally put food on our plates. Part of
that "hunger" has to included each of us following a
prescribed business plan that is so successful it has
achieved world acclaim. BNI works when you apply the basics
every day until it becomes as routine as brushing your teeth.
Our businesses all grow when BNI principles are applied.

TDT Inc. of Scarsdale is awarded the East Spring
Valley Firehouse project
.

After a decade of planning, the site preparation for the
new East Spring Valley fire house began in early
August.  The new fire house is necessary because
the closest fire house is a mile away, a 10 minute drive,
leaving the neighborhood exposed  following years of
residential and commercial development.

The new fire house, designed by Metropolis
Architecture of Nyack, will be 10,000 square feet,
will house up to 4 trucks and will have administrative
offices and meeting rooms on the second floor.
The nearly 1 acre lot was donated by Costco who
is one on the neighborhood businesses.  Completion is expected in Spring 2008.

Gail Moggio, chairwoman of the East Spring Valley Fire District and Fire Commissioner, was a significant force
in bringing the project to fruition.  It was through her hard work and Costco’s donation of the land, that made
fire house a reality.

The fire house will be made of brick and block, structural steel and pre-cast concrete architectural details.  “It is
a traditional fire house design,“ says Michael Lengel, architect,  “with contemporary elements.”  Its construction
is durable and easy to maintain.  The exterior arches, roof lines and glass enclosed stairway gives the
functionality a contemporary aspect yet blends well with its surroundings.  “It was designed to be easily
expanded to a third floor if needed,” said Lengel.

TDT, Inc., general contractor and construction management firm based in Scarsdale, was awarded the project
at the end of July.  TDT was able to mobilize their excavating equipment immediately and began the site work
within a few days.

Ray Carile, president of TDT, Inc., said he is very proud to be chosen for the project especially because it is a
community service project.  Mr. Carile is a volunteer firefighter in his home town of Somers.  “It will be one of the
best looking buildings in Rockland,” Carile said.

Mr. Carile purchased the building on Dunwoodie Street and moved his construction business to Scarsdale from
Yonkers 11 years ago. He started his company in 1989 after working in construction for corporate America.  His
mission is to outperform the competition and exceed his clients’ expectations, qualities he could not find in
contractors he hired when on the customer’s side. TDT is a commercial general contractor and construction
management firm that serves the New York tri-state area.

Who did you tell today about BNI? Sometimes it's
just a matter of listening and keeping an open
mind. Often, an invitation presents itself but we
either don't recognize it or fail to act upon it.
That's why it's important to be prepared. Have a
pamphlet in your jacket or your purse and don't
be afraid to pull it out and hand it to someone.
More than likely, they've not only heard of BNI,
but have always wanted to learn more about
what we do. Invite them to a meeting. Exchange
business cards, and follow up. You may not
believe it but the locksmith you bring in today,
may bring in a window company tomorrow, who
brings in a landscaper next month, who brings in
a hardware store, and so on. Over the course of
the year, if each one of us brought in just one
new member, by the end of 2009 we'd have 100
members. This is not a fantasy. It is reality. Our
reality if we simply follow the model that is
already proven to be successful worldwide...

So tell me now... who did you tell about BNI
today?
